Like other machine applications, Nest Wifi is not a modem, so it needs to be connected to the modem you already have (which may be provided by your ISP) in order to work. For me, that meant connecting to my Verizon Fios connection, which is a gigabit fiber link. (Unlike Eero and others, Nest Wifi does not work in “bridge mode,” which makes setup with Fios more integrated than other routers. .) This connection enters my home in the living room on the main floor. Then I set the Point to my home office, the lower level where the router is.

This setting was enough to provide solid Wi-Fi in all parts of my house and gave me enough bandwidth to stream 4K video wherever I had a signal.
